Morristown, a village of 250 was a center of iron supply for the American
Revolution, and though it lay only 30 miles west of the main British forces in New York, she was protected by a series of parallel mountain ranges. It was the double luxury of a reasonable location in close proximity to the enemy, brought to the camp twice a General Washington's main force here, first in 1777 and again in 1779-1780.
After the Battle of Princeton in the 3rd January 1777 a worn-down colonial army
swarmed the small town looking for shelter in the few public buildings, private residences,
Barns and stables, then in existence. Washington steadily rebuilt his
Labeling troops, desertion and insipiente overcome food shortages.
His greatest enemy, however, was disease. An outbreak of smallpox threat
decimate a small army, and Washington ordered the little-known, and many,
horrible procedure of inoculation. Some indeed died, but most of hisTroops
Contract is not the deadly smallpox.
The park was established in 1933 as a National Historic Park, in the heart of the newly created
Jersey.

27 miles from Morristown, well-groomed trails.
